Intestinal causes related to Abdominal Pain
- Appendicitis: Begins as periumbilical pain that migrates to the right iliac fossa. Accompanied by fever and nausea.
- Obstruction: Features include colicky pain, vomiting, and abdominal distension. Absence of flatus and stool is typical.
- Diverticulitis: Pain primarily in the left lower quadrant, often with fever and altered bowel habits.
- Gastroenteritis: Diarrhea and vomiting are key, and a fever may be present.
- Mesenteric adenitis: Mimics symptoms of appendicitis, but often occurs in children after a viral infection.
- Strangulated hernia: Presents with sudden severe pain at the site of the hernia and a non-reducible lump.
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Diarrhea with or without blood, weight loss, and possibly joint pain.
- Intussusception: Mostly in children with colicky pain and the presence of “red currant jelly” stools.
- Volvulus: Sudden severe pain with abdominal distension, more common in the elderly.
